Abstract
Deep geological repositories are the international consensus solution for safely isolating high-level nuclear waste from the biosphere. In Germany, among others Opalinus Clay is under consideration to serve as stable host rock environment. Although physical and chemical characteristics of clays suppress microbial growth, Opalinus Clay harbors diverse microbial communities that can be relevant for the safety of a repository.
