Abstract:
To understand the Earth system and its dynamics, all processes and interactions between the various components of the Earth must be known. Basis for obtaining this knowledge are global, long-term observation data of the complex processes on and within the Earth. GFZ has established an integrated ground- and satellite-based geomonitoring infrastructure which is used to determine geodynamic processes of the solid Earth, the oceans, the continental hydrosphere, and large ice surfaces. It is run operationally in cooperation with national and international partners. The observation data gained are entered into numerical models for a better understanding of the Earth system. In addition to the modeling of dynamic processes from the Earth’s core reaching over Earth’s surface to the upper atmosphere, a variety of geophysical investigations is possible with this global observation infrastructure.
