Abstract: The Anthropocene describes our current time where the environment of our planet is significantly
shaped by human activities. Rapid growth in human population and affluence have triggered
sustainability challenges across all parts of the Earth system. At the same time, advances in
Earth observations, system models, and digital technologies now enable us to create „Digital
Twins“ of the environment. Digital twins combine Earth system data and models to generate
highly accurate digital representations of planet Earth, helping us explore consequences of human
development scenarios and assess their impacts on the environment. As a result, digital
twins offer decision-makers a powerful decision support tool to balance human development,
sustainable resource use and environmental preservation.
This document introduces the concept of digital twins of planet Earth and summarizes key initiatives
within the Helmholtz Association‘s Earth and Environment research.
