Abstract:
Solar flares and coronal mass ejections, especially the stronger ones, are known to occur in active regions of the Sun. Therefore, understanding how such source regions are created and evolve is important not only for solar and heliophysics but also in view of space weather forecasting. In this presentation, we review the key observations and state-of-the-art numerical modeling of emergence and evolution of flare-prolific active regions. We also discuss what science can be achieved on this issue by the next-generation missions in the 2020s, represented by JAXA's SOLAR-C mission.
