Abstract:
Drought-flood abrupt alternation(DFAA) is an extreme hydrological event in which a region/basin experiences a sudden concentrated heavy rainfall after a persistent drought in the early stage, and drought and flooding events alternate within a short period of time. The frequent occurrence of DFAA events in the context of climate change leads to changes in the migration, transformation, and accumulation processes of pollutants in the environmental media of the watershed, altering the quality of water bodies and threatening downstream drinking water safety. Here, we construct a new DFAA index based on the surpluses and deficits of precipitation and terrestrial water storage (TWS) to analyze the dynamic change patterns and possible driving mechanisms of river dissolved organic carbon (DOC) fluxes under different DFAA intensities. The results of the study can provide scientific support for strategic decisions on water security under extreme climate.
